West Winds Yorkshire Tearooms in Buckden at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales is marking Yorkshire Day with a fortnight-long celebration of Yorkshire Dialect. There will be Yorkshire cuisine, a menu written in dialect, a crash course in speaking dialect and Yorkshire flags.
And on Sunday 7 August, Bill Mitchell MBE, former Editor of the Dalesman, will be at the tearooms, reading extracts from some of his many books on Yorkshire life and tradition.
West Winds Dialect Fortnight runs from Saturday 30 July to Sunday 14 August 2011. The tearooms are open daily, except Mondays and Tuesdays, from 12.30pm to 6pm. For more details, see www.westwindsinyorkshire.co.uk or call 01756 760883.

Wishing all fellow-Tykes a very happy Yorkshire Day.
Despite emigrating, first to Newcastle in 1975 the all points in England until I left the UK last year I'm still proud to be a Yorkshireman. Along with our friends and neighbours in adjoining counties they're the finest people in the UK, warm, friendly, plain-speaking and more trustworthy than most.
Whilst I took the decision to head to Greece instead of the North Riding to escape the ghastly life of the Midlands (two main reasons, more friends here and some decent weather most of the year thanks to Helios! :P) I never fail to extol the virtues of Yorkshire's fine countryside, history and heritage - and of course it's cuisine - not least WHITBY Fish & Chips:

Oh, Whitby is the home of my ancestors, so I'll always have a soft spot for it. Northallerton is where I grew up and went to school. It is still a thriving market town with the finest range of shops and a great twice-weekly market - better than any other I can bring to mind - and it's natives are as friendly as ever.

So, I'll be sporting a WHITE ROSE on Sunday and remembering happy days whilst I celebrate here in Faliraki on the sunshine island of Rhodes!

Hello everyone, we'll be celebrating Yorkshire Day here in Switzerland with a family barbecue and bonfire. There will also be a very impressive firework display from the top of Munot, the ancient castle in our town of Schaffhausen. 1st August is also National Day so it's quite possible the locals will be celebrating that instead ;-)

Yorkshire is such a special place to me and I am travelling up to Yorkhsire as early as I can on Yorkshire Day. I was born in Hull, lived in Hornsea from the age of eight and went to Bridlington High School for Girls. Sadly I only get to Yorkshire as often as my job allows. Visiting my sister and my beloved Yorkshire are the two best things I can think of to do, when I am on holiday.

On a wonderful day like today, Yorkshire folk from around the globe should be dancing in the streets. We have much to be grateful for. See my August 1st blogpost at www.beefgravy.blogspot.com
However, isn't it it time we retrieved our historical boundaries? London bureaucrats of the 1970's steam-rollered through boundary changes in an illogical and cruel manner that no Yorkshireman or woman would ever have agreed to if we had been given a vote on the matter.
I'm dancing in the streets of Sheffield. HAPPY YORKSHIRE DAY!

I went from Ilkley to Saddleworth on Yorkshire Day and thoroughly enjoyed the speeches, brass band music, parade and country fair. This is a special part of Yorkshire and 37 years on there are clearly many people who appreciate the integrity of our boundary. Incidentally, last year I enjoyed Yorkshire Day in Ilkley singing our national anthem in front of the town hall with many others. But Saddleworth people need support and recognition.
